Sis’ Birthday season is starting – she’s got all hers in winter/spring, just as we’ve got (most of) ours in the fall. First off is # 2 Nephew, he’ll be 7 on Friday, and we’re all invited to a party.
I’m all into little girl gifts and baby gifts these days, and not at all au fait with what to get a little boy who turns 7… I had the help of the older brats for Christmas gifts, which I thought was a good idea. Perhaps I’ll send them off again, with the allotted sum of money and a brief to find something fun and (if possible) educational…
While browsing toy shops before Christmas, I became painfully aware that the evolution of toys has happened behind my back! For the first time, I was quite thankful for toy commercials – at least they give you a clue about what’s hot amongst the brat squad. (All right, they make you believe that their items are hot, but the point is brats believe it too, and if the point is to make brats happy – bring on the plastic, preferably with remote control, sound and whatever….)
I usually fall back on LEGO. Luckily, they’re plastic, and can be had with remote control, sound and whatever, and there’s usually something suitable for every gender and age group.
If I send the older brats out shopping, they may well come back with some elaborate, vile looking action figure, and when I ask about the educational value, they’ll say: “Look, it shoots arrows!!!” (They didn’t do too badly for Christmas – it didn’t shoot arrows, it rode a motorbike…)
