The English language sometimes has me stumped.

For example: what’s the difference between “custom” and regular? What is a custom promotional product, compared to same, but without the custom?
Along the same vein is “custom jewelry”. I know what that is. I think. The trouble begins when people say:”costume jewelry”. Is that the same thing, but misspelled/misspoken, or are the two totally different?

Do enlighten me, please!

custom means specialized like a custom holiday card might have your name printed on it or your photo and name. costume jewelry means not “real” gems or gold, custom would mean like a ring designed for you. make sense? just have some cake and forget it! ha ha

empress bee is correct. I am in Arizona and I am really enjoying your blog. I am going to visit Norway in July — though I really wish I could have been there with the snow! Yes when companies or vendors say they have custom items, it means it is not standard inventory they carry–they will create or modify pieces for you making it custom-made for you. Same with custom jewelry and costume jewelry is better known as “fake”. Have a great day!

Comedy Plus Says:

Costume jewelry isn’t real. Paste if you will. It’s cheap stuff.

Custom jewelry is specially made. Say I may have a bunch of diamonds and I want a ring made just so. The jeweler and I would get together to make that custom piece the way I want it made.

Have a terrific weekend. :)

Aha! Thanks all – I’m officially unstumped!

Vixen Says:

Just remember it like this: costume (fake) = a Halloween costume. In other words something that is pretending to be something it is not.

Custom is anything that is not mass-produced in identical form. In other words, a custom piece is usually one-of-a-kind.

Relax Max Says:

You are one of the smartest people I know. Truly. I think they have already told you, but I’ll repeat what I know.

Custom means it is built to your specifications instead of just “off the shelf”. Like a custom home is built from your own plans instead of just going out and looking at houses that are not exactly what you want. Same with jewelry or anything else. I remember we used to “customize” our cars as teenagers. We made them look like we wanted them.

Costume and custom… like they said, “costume jewelry” is “fake” with substitute stones instead of the real thing. But you could make your own “custom” costume jewelry. I mean, if YOU designed it and used fake stones. Heh.

I still think you are awesome, Stine. Always have.

Stine Says:

I’ve always thought that custom was the fake, and that costume was a bastardization of the word. There you go, ask, and you shall learn… Thanks again – I’ll be sure to get back to you all next time something baffles me!
Max, you’re a dear.
