Mo can!

A little while ago, I translated the Norwegian word for “outbuilding” a bit too literally, and came up with “outhouse”. I learned from the comments I got that an “outhouse” has a specific purpose, and that the word is “outbuilding”…

Todays Manic Monday is in honor of the outhouse, the outdoor can!

A modern interior…

A necessary feature everywhere before the WC, you’ll still find these cans where there’s no running water (cabins in the mountains or by the sea). On some farms, they’ve been kept for nostalgic (and sometimes practical) reasons. Apparently, there is still a septic service in Oslo (our capital) that will empty the few that are still in operation… (yes, it’s 2008 here too!)

Such pretty pictures of a sometimes unpleasant place. Here in the U.S. there are septic service companies that handle rural areas where they have septic tanks even with indoor plumbing, so they attend to the more rustic versions as well.

I’m terrified of them. Why? The “Spider” incident of 1972

I grew up using a “two-holer” at the house where my mom now lives, in Virginia. There’s indoor plumbing there, but there’s also always been an outhouse there.
There used to be a “single” and a “two-holer” (a double) but now just the two-holer. And yep, I still use it when I visit.
Of course, I don’t visit in the winter!
Great post for “can”!!!
Thanks for participating in Manic Mondays!

Hubby got me an outhouse for mother’s day a few years ago. It is a yard decoration. Crazy but I love it.

We got married in the mountains…. way back in the mountains where we go backpacking every year. Somewhere there’s a picture of everybody standing in line for the outhouse before the cerimony.
