I wrote a post on my other blog some time ago about my various addictions. I don’t have many, and most of them aren’t substance related, apart from food and tobacco.
I now realize that I’ve left one out, and I’ll try to rectify that here. Coffee.
I love coffee. The first thing I do in the morning, is to put the kettle on for coffee. Yes, I did say I put the kettle on. I do it the old-fashioned way – boil water, add ground coffee, leave to infuse, and sift into an appropriate container. I sometimes use one of those glass press thingies too, and for when I want a cup of gunpowder, I use an electric percolator.
One of the many things I love about France, by the way, is that if you order a coffee, you get a tiny, very hot cup of gunpowder espresso. Here, a cup of coffee more often than not means a large cup of slightly coffee flavoured brown water. Luckily, most places have espresso machines these days. I tend to choose restaurants that do…
Out here in the middle of the woods, where a decent cup of espresso is hard to come by, I can still cultivate my addiction by making coffee the way I do. If, however, someone were to send me a state-of-the-art espresso machine, complete with froth-maker, milk heater and 20-something bottles of flavour mixes, I’d write such a flourishing review they wouldn’t know what hit them. That’s the type of blogger I am.
