The old name of the area where we live was “Iron Valley”. It’s earned its name. The ground is full of iron ore, and our water contains quite a lot of iron – to the point where we have to dismantle our bathroom and kitchen faucets on a regular basis to get rid of the iron particles that are stuck there.
Also, our house is at the end of the power line, which means that the power tension is… fluctuating. We go through electrical appliances like mad. We’ve lived here for 5 years, and we’re on our second stove, dishwasher and washing machine, and we’ve had to repair them all as well. The TV decoder has died (Tvs are still living, touch wood). As for light bulbs – energy saving bulbs are a joke, and the halogen ones pop on a regular basis.
I know. We should get on to our electrical company. I fear it’ll be a waste of time and energy though – it’s a big company, and we’re just a drop in the ocean to them. I will do it. At the very least we should get a rebate for poor quality service…

There are, however, so many upsides about living the way we do. The closeness to nature, the fact that we can have all the animals we want, that we can cut the grass whenever we like (or not), since no one bothers us about much of anything. People say – how can you bear living so far away from everything? Well, it’s not far, for one. And not a weekend goes by without the impromptu visit of at least one set of friends or family. Which means that they know how to find us, and they like it here too… The good life for us? This is as close as we’ll get!

Stumble it!

Seasons Greetings and Happy New Year!

I don’t know…I think I’d prefer your kind of stress-free living any day!

Thankfully, we don’t have problems here with our water -not in the quality anyway. And where I live, down in the valley, near the end of the water line, we also generally have good pressure. But my son, whose house is up atop the hill, about 3/4 of a mile from my house, has terrible pressure problems. It takes upwards of a half-hour, at least, for him to fill the tub to bathe or to run his washing machine. A bit of a hassle there. Electrical problems though -now that, or at least the light bulbs blowing out -seems to be a regular happening here. I don’t know if it is the house wiring, the quality of light bulbs (but it is the same regardless of what type of bulbs we use) or if it is a problem caused by the power company itself (Never thought of that) but we do go through lots and lots of light bulbs here too!

I’ll trade you. I’ve got neighbors coming out my ears. Then let’s mention the dogs that they put out back when they go to work that bark all day long. I’ll trade you.

Have a terrific day communing with nature. :)

We have a little bit of both worlds – we live in a house that was built in 1817, but in 1922 the original owners family sub-divided their land and built two houses on either side so we have neighbors ‘too close for comfort’, since our property is 3 times as long as it is wide. But at least we’re not in a subdivision that is rife with rules. When we move, we will be looking specifically for a house with more land so we can enjoy the quiet of nature, too! :) Thanks for reminding me that a future move will be a good thing! ;)

That must be so frustrating. We only have to deal with water pipes freezing on occasion. You have a whole mess of issues I would not want to deal with! You get total credit for perseverance in the country. I get the benefits of the country without the hassles… :)

I moved to the country about 6 years ago. We have a lot of limestone that has already caused our washing machine to break down twice! No problem with electricity so far…
Our private joke is that it’s not really quiet out here as everyone from the city assumed it would be! The pensioners make the most racket!

A happy New Year to you!

Happy New Year Stine. Thinking of you today.

What an amazing photo, and what a way to live. My life’s goal is to get out into the valleys and mountains and live a more secluded life closer to nature.
